Maths Week 2021

Junior Infants

This week was Maths Week and Junior Infants were working on patterns. We used cones to make some coloured patterns in PE.

Senior Infants

“Maths week is so fun” was a popular saying in Senior Infants this week! We played lots of maths games such as snakes and ladders, roll and add and picking apples. We also took our maths outside and integrated it into PE where the children figured out which group had the most/least and by how many. They also ordered their bears according to their size. The outdoor maths hunt was also a big hit with the children and they did a super job! Have a look at some of our photos below to see what we got up to!

1st Class

For maths week we practiced our tables on the iPads. We played spooky X’s and O’s with spiders and frogs and a Lego addition game in stations. In PE, we did number relays in teams. The Connect 4’s were the fastest team to put the numbers 1-10 in the right order!

Ms.Furney’s 2nd class maths group had great fun completing a maths trail for ‘Maths Week’ by looking around the classroom environment and answering a variety of questions.

2nd Class

2nd Class had good fun for maths week! We were looking at different shapes both in school and at home. Well-done to everyone for engaging with the content. We had the opportunity to use the new iPads to practice our times tables while playing hit the button. Also, in the classroom we have been practicing our computation skills with the children using their addition, subtraction and multiplication skills in the Countdown number game – using addition, subtraction and multiplication. It is important to remember that maths is everywhere and we can keep learning about it outside of the classroom.

3rd Class

This week was Maths week. The children learned about different types of graphs like pictograms, bar charts and block graphs. They worked in groups to choose a category, ask people questions and design and present their graph.

Ms. Kilbride’s Maths station groups in 2nd class have been very busy. Her first class group also created beautiful foil fish.

Ms. Caldbeck’s Maths group were very busy collecting and analysing data this week.

4th class completed a traffic survey for ‘Maths Week’.

5th Class

For Maths week, we looked at two different maths activities and challenges. First one we looked at was Napier’s bones. Napier’s bones were used for for multiplication and division before the invention of the calculator. It uses rod of numbers and addition to solve a multiplication sum. It was kind of tricky but we enjoyed the challenge. We also tried out Caesar cipher. A instrument with two wheel that was used to make and break secret messages. We tried breaking a making different secret codes for our partners. It was great fun trying to break the different codes.

6th Class

For ‘Maths Week’ this week 6th class completed a Maths Trail outside, they created acrostic poems for Maths Week and they created tricky problems in pairs.
